OnBoard Energy > E-cube mini

e-cube mini - Silent, emission free, portable energy.
E-cube mini is a portable, maintenance free, self contained energy pod that delivers clean
silent power anywhere it is needed. It can be used on it's own or in conjunction with a
generator or mains power supply.
At the heart of the concept is energy efficiency. Working with a conventional generator, Ecube
mini can reduce run-hours by up to 80% (depending on circumstances) and mean
that a smaller generator can be used than would otherwise be required. Savings in
generator fuel consumption, extended maintenance intervals and significant increase in
lifespan are then achieved with the obvious cost savings. In addition, emissions and noise
pollution are dramatically reduced too
As a back up power supply to cover intermittent power interruptions, e-cube is a silent and
clean alternative to a diesel generator. Ideal for use where maintenance is to be carried
out and mains power has to be switched off temporarily. Power transfer between power
sources can be seamless with no interruption to supply.
Working with a generator, e-cube can boost the maximum capacity of the available power
and provide an option for silent running when power consumption is low thus saving
running hours reducing fuel consumption and maintenance. In addition, a smaller
generator can be used to do the same work. Re-fueling intervals can be reduced and
overall fuel efficiency significantly improved.
E-cube can also be used to increase the available power from a limited capacity source.
For example, from a 32A supply, with the 10kVA e-cube, output can be increased to 75A
with a huge 118A available short term for starting inductive loads. This is ideal for
example, where construction and maintenance work is being carried out in locations where
the normal mains power is limited.

The key benefits of e-cube are in significant increases in fuel efficiency, reduced service
requirements, reduction in noise pollution and exhaust emissions as well as being an
attractive and environmentally friendly alternative to a diesel generator for power back-up.
E-cube can be supplied in different power ratings and back-up configurations. Modules
can be banked for increased power support or extended autonomy (running without
generator). Modules can be used together with renewable energy sources such as solar
PV and wind generators as an entirely independent power source that will not require refueling.
Custom technical requirements can be accommodated.
An option for remote communication is available so that performance and status can be
monitored at a distance. This facility uses a web based portal to relay real-time data for
things like battery condition, fuel levels, operating status and faults.
Typical applications for e-pod are in construction, site maintenance and emergency backup,
outdoor events (weddings, exhibitions, sporting events etc), silent power in sensitive
locations (night-time running of traffic lights for example), site welfare units and many
more. E-cube also suits remote, unmanned locations where regular, costly refueling visits
can be significantly reduced in frequency.
Application example 1 - Outdoor event:
To provide power to an outdoor event such as a wedding or exhibition, a generator is the
obvious choice. By deploying e-pod together with a generator significant benefits can be
achieved. Firstly, a smaller generator can be used to do the same job; e-pod uses .power
assist' mode to top up the output of the generator during periods of peak power demand.
When power requirements are low (during the night for example) or when the noise of the
generator is undesirable, the generator can switch off saving fuel, noise and running
hours. Collectively, this means longer generator life and lower service costs, reduced fuel
consumption, exhaust emissions and noise reduction/elimination as well as extended
refueling intervals.
Application example 2 - Site with limited power availability:
In locations where the available power supply is limited, either as a temporary solution or
for permanent needs, e-pod can be used to boost the total power available. This is again
achieved through the deployment of the .power assist' feature. This would be
advantageous where service or maintenance work is being carried out or as an alternative
to the cost of up-grading the power supply in order to cope with intermittent peak loading
for machinery and other equipment.
Power assist explained.
Our consumption of electrical energy is rarely constant. Generally, long periods of low
energy consumption are punctuated by short bursts of high demand. Power assist is a
way that the impact of this characteristic can be leveled out from the perspective of the
power source. In lay terms, power assist uses the energy in a battery like a flywheel
adding power when it is needed and soaking up what is spare when available. This way a
power source limited to, say 32A can still be used to deliver what is needed to start highly
inductive loads or to support periods of sustained high power consumption.

As an example, take a site welfare unit. Power demand whilst the unit is being used, say
at lunchtime, will be high. A 10kVA generator may then run to support the load but with all
the cooking appliances, water & space heaters etc being used, power demand may
increase beyond 10kVA. E-pod will automatically go into power assist mode to support
this demand and deliver the shortfall. Once the workforce return to the afternoon shift,
power demand may then fall back to below 1kW for a few lights and a fridge. Then the
generator can switch off and e-pod will cope on it's own; even if the occasional blast of the
microwave or kettle is required.

Through the night, e-pod will run happily to keep everything ticking-over with no need for
the generator and in the morning the generator can run again for a few hours to top up the
battery and provide power as needed first thing. Generator will be automatically managed
by the system starting and stopping the set as and when needed.
The reduction in generator running time compared to 24hour duty will be significant. Fuel
savings could be in the order or 20-30 liters per day, service intervals will be extended,
noise pollution reduced, re-fueling intervals extended and all this is achieved with a smaller
generator. Fuel savings alone could run to over £400 per month, possibly more!
